Agnes Martin Phares

Agnes Martin Phares, age 99 (just five months shy of her 100th birthday), was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 29, 2011.  She was born in Akron to the late Thomas and Ellen (Paul) Martin where she resided until moving to Mogadore in 1972.  She graduated from Central High School in 1929, and in later years, when her children were at Central, she was active in the PTA and the band’s booster organization. Mrs. Phares was a life-long member of Family of Faith United Methodist Church, where she was active in the UMW, Eve Circle, the Helping Hands and Willing Workers Sunday School classes and Keenagers. She helped establish at her church, and worked in, the East Market Day Nursery, which served the East Akron Community for 33 years. She was also an active member of the Pythian Sisters, Queen Esther Temple for 75 years.  Agnes was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Hayward; daughter, Marilyn Hartline; son-in-law, Andrew Mayton; and five sisters.  She is survived by daughters, Vonadell Mayton, Roberta Morrow and Nancy (Charles) Kelly; son, James (Betty) Phares; son-in-law, Jack Hartline; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends.  The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Family of Faith United Methodist Church, 800 E. Market St. Akron, OH 44305, with Pastor Ron Shultz officiating.  Interment at Hillside Memorial Park.  Friends may call at the Eckard Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 E. Market St. on Monday, April 4, 2011 from 5 – 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday for ONE HOUR prior to the service, from 10 – 11 a.m.  Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Family of Faith UMC, Scholarship Fund.
